41. Review of Demon Slayer: Mugen Train (Dir. Haruo Sotozaki, 2020) (+ My Return to the Cinema)

Image
Through all of the lockdowns and tiers, one of my most missed activities has for sure been attending the cinema - expected as a film graduate, I guess. Therefore it should come as no surprise my excitement when theatres reopened, especially when I realised that the highly anticipated Demon Slayer Movie was going to be having a limited UK release, and booked tickets for the first showing near me. Things didn't start off great, as it had slipped my mind that all of the rabid anime stans have also been locked inside for the past year or so with one of their only weeaboo outlets being TikTok, and thus putting a group of them in a dark room together was probably not the best idea. The amount of "SHEEESH"es and "Eren Yeagers" and noise that came out of the other cinema goers as the film began was enough to make me cringe into my seat as it was.  But then we realised that the subtitles were cut off. After many sounds of complaint and a few minutes of the projector bei...

18. Review of Netflix's Alice in Borderland (2020)

Image
If you can handle blood, violence and subtitles, you HAVE to watch Alice in Borderland. Adapted from a manga series, Alice in Borderland follows Arisu (Kento Yamazaki) and his friends as they find themselves transported into a desolate alternate version of Tokyo, where they are forced to compete in games to collect cards and extend the days they have left to live. The show is a perfect combination of everything I enjoy about anime and live action - lots of action, tension and crazy story concepts with the element of seeing a real flesh person going through those things, making things seem so much more real and intense.  The show being live action also meant that the cinematography elements hit even harder, especially in the first episode where the setting is established through eerie extreme longshots, emphasising just how desolate Tokyo had become. The games are extremely difficult and usually result in the losers of the games meeting a gruesome end; rather reminiscent of t...

08. My Hero Academia: Heroes Rising (2019) Film Review

Image
Okay, fine, I'll admit that I have turned into a major weeb. And by that I mean I willingly and eagerly spent my money to watch the latest My Hero Academia movie in cinemas.  My Hero Academia is an extremely popular anime as of the moment, having it's merchandise on sale in Primark (that's how you know you've made it) and is currently deep into it's fourth season.  This anime was a love-at-first-watch show for me when I was introduced to it by my boyfriend, as not only did I love the characters, but the premise of the whole show to me was just so fun.  Heroes Rising was only on limited release in cinemas where I live, so I jumped to the opportunity to see my beloved anime boys and girls on the big screen.  The screening had a minuscule turnout (as expected, can't imagine there's a thriving anime community in Leicester). This pleased me, as it meant we could enjoy the film comfortably and wouldn't have to endure the annoying clamour of M...
