01. Black Panther (Dir. Ryan Coogler, 2018) Film Review

As a valentines treat, I took my boyfriend to see Black Panther. (When I say treat, I mean treating myself to a close up, HD view of Michael B. Jordans face.)

First off, I’d like to just say that I thoroughly, thoroughly enjoyed this film. The characters? Brilliant. The mise-en-scene? Phenomenal. Cinematography? Astonishing.
Let’s just say that pretty much everything ranked this film extremely high on my appreciation scale.

Black Panther was a delight from start to finish, giving me a Marvel origin movie that was on par with Iron Man (Dir. John Favreau, 2008). The only negative thing I can think to comment on is the use of outdated meme references, but even those can be overlooked.

I think the aspects that really stood out to me, and impressed me the most, were the plentiful amount of strong female characters, and how the soundtrack to the film really made me feel like I was watching a film, rather than just another movie to add onto the Marvel franchise.

Marvel seem to have been digging themselves into a repetitive rut of using the same tracks, or tracks that sound remarkably similar. (I’m looking at you, Thor: Ragnarok (Dir. Taika Waititi, 2017) with your exhaustion of Led Zeppelins Immigrant Song.)
However, Black Panther used a score made up of music you could genuinely enjoy in your playlists, that also incorporate relevant artists to represent the film. The music was not only applicable to the movie itself, but also to issues faced today by the black community.
Black Panther has been a fresh, great addition to the marvel cinematic universe, and also stands as a racial and politically aware piece of influential film.

Everyone should be able to go to the cinema and feel represented. The box office and film industry doesn’t need to be constantly dominated by white people.

Speaking of representation, Black Panther mastered their portray of women. The female characters in this film were real— intelligent, strong, funny, beautiful, vulnerable at times, and most of all, great leaders. They knew their shit, and they utilised it.

I walked out of that cinema feeling empowered, and I hope that’s how every other woman or girl feels after seeing this movie.

I recommend that everyone should definitely see this movie, even if they aren’t the biggest fan of superheroes.
I think that Black Panther is going to be a film that people will still be talking about for years to come, for all the right reasons.
