04. J-Hope: 'Hope World' mix tape and 'Daydream' MV Review
J-Hope (rapper from the Korean group BTS, for all you uneducated people out there) finally dropped his first mix tape, after years of anticipation. After only one day of being released, J-Hope now holds the title for a Korean solo artist with the most number ones on iTunes.
When it finally was time to sit down, relax and bless my ears and eyes, I was definitely not disappointed. Compared to J-Hope's other rapline members in BTS, RM and Suga (Agust D) who have released mix tapes previously, J-Hope has a much chiller vibe to his music, which I personally enjoy more than harsher sounding rap, and I also feel this could be really beneficial for him in order to reach out to a wider audience.
The sound feels much more Americanised than one might expect from a Korean rappers mix tape, but overall I think that 'Daydream' as the title track is a great representation of J-Hope as an artist and a person, as he generally comes off happy and at ease with life (yes, even when he is non stop screaming from excitement).
Visually the music video was rather bright and eye catching, not only with the green screen animations and colourful fonts, but also with the costuming. I was slightly disappointed at the lack of choreography incorporated into the music video, as J-Hope is an extremely talented dancer and I always love watching him dance, however I understand that for a solo release, especially with a mix tape, that choreography wouldn't be a necessary factor, as it's mostly about the music.
The mix tape itself is some top notch stuff, containing a mixture of both chill and harder beats. My favourite tracks would definitely have to be Base Line, HANGSANG (feat. Supreme Boi) and Blue Side (Outro).
I J-Hope (kill me now) that everyone continues to show their love and support for this mixtape, as it has been in the making since 2014 and only just now does J-Hope feel that it is good enough to share with the world.
