26. Review of To All The Boys: Always and Forever (Dir. Michael Fimognari, 2021) [Spoilers]
Just to start off; I'm not particularly a fan of the To All The Boys franchise. The first one was okay, as cheesy as it is, but I really do not think the world needed a second or third instalment.
I found out about To All The Boys: Always and Forever through a YouTube advert, and I was set on watching it just to see if I was right, that the film would literally just be a two hour long drawn out version of the trailer. And I was right. There was nothing of surprise for me in this movie as I already knew exactly how it was going to go, as the trailer had told me everything that I needed to. Usually a trailer is a sneak peek into a film, intended to entice you to want to see more, but apparently whoever put this movies trailer together didn't get the memo.Anyway, onto the film.
The main narrative arc which the main characters Lara-Jean (Lana Condor) and Peter (Noah Centineo) go through during this two hour long movie is whether they will end up going to Stanford together and whether or not it will affect their relationship.Shockingly, the plan to go to college together doesn't work and Lara-Jean falls in love with the idea of going to college in New York, 3,000 miles away from Peter. As you can imagine, this doesn't go down particularly well and Peter gets a bit peeved about it. However, despite them breaking up again as a plot point, in cheesy rom-com fashion, everything sorts out in the end and they get back together.
Overall, my opinions of the actual film content were that I feel it's something I have seen before, yet executed worse. Maybe it's the fact I had to keep pausing every time Noah Centineo acted so I could cringe for a good minute or so, or that I kept checking to see how much longer I had to endure watching the film, but I just didn't feel engaged by the love story at all. Plus some of the shots were just so STATIC and stayed still for way too long, which didn't particularly help with keeping my attention focused.
Two things I did enjoy, however, were the how the relationships between Lara-Jean and her friends were fleshed out a lot more rather than her whole life being boy-centric, and also the montage scenes which I felt were executed nicely, plus the K-Pop was a nice attention booster.
If you're looking for a really cheesy, not that great romance, and you have time to pause every few minutes to cringe, feel free to knock yourself out. I, however, will be regretting forcing myself through it.
